Flower Photography Tips

Tips to Improve Flower Photography for Beginners :

Flower photography is a great activity that I enjoy. Capturing these natural beauties gives a sense of peace and a connection with nature. “Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.” – Luther Burbank.

I have compiled some of the known tips and tricks to capture vibrant images of flowers.

Proximity :One of the known tips is getting close to the flower as much as possible to get the details. This is particularly essential if you are using a prime lens and want to get a nice blur in the background .Setting to a wide aperture will help get maximum blurring, also called ‘bokeh’. If you use a telephoto lens, you will need to maintain the minimum focusing distance.

Weather – I shot these flowers on an overcast day with a lot of wind. Did you know some of the best pictures are obtained on an overcast day ?So do not shy away from taking pictures on a cloudy day.Sunny and bright days are not the only days when we can capture beautiful images. The soft light on an overcast and cloudy day actually hides any imperfections .Reflectors can also be used to brighten the subject especially if it is too shady .Avoid a windy day if possible .But if you have no other choice ,the option is to use a higher shutter speed . This will reduce the blur or shakes caused by wind movement.I had to hold the flowers still as well to capture some images as it was windy. It can be tricky if you are shooting with one hand and holding with another.Using a tripod can also help.

Lighting : To get a different photographic effect , use back light to capture flowers . They give a different perspective to the image. Back light for instance could be the sun rays that lights your subject directly from the front. You may be able to capture sun rays through trees or between petals.

Others : Another variation to flower photography is to focus on different parts of the flowers from various angles .Flowers with mist ,dew drops and insects make great pictures. If you are interested in a real close up photography of the flowers, macro photography is another alternative. The macro lens zooms up to more than what a human eye can naturally view and larger than life size .This is a beautiful perspective as well.

Keep experimenting, with many trial and errors, you will be happy to see awesome results .Happy clicking !

I’m such a novice at photography, and only use my iPhone, but I do enjoy doing it and this has made me want to go out and do it more as I’ve not been out for the joy of simply taking photos for a very long time. So bokeh refers to blurring? Never knew that before either! You’re incredibly talented with photography. Fantastic tips!xx
