Turtle - Today's photos of the day are captures of the turtle. I got some close-up shots while sitting near a pond in a park watching them swim and walk around.
For those of you who don't know the difference between a tortoise and a turtle. Tortoises are mostly land animals and can not survive in water, whereas turtles can live on both land and water. There is also the difference in the shape of their shells. The tortoises have domed-shaped shells and the turtles have flatter shells.
probably the mom swam by and came to the smaller one.
Did you know one of the interesting facts about turtles is that they evolved before mammals, birds, snakes, crocodiles, etc? They have been on earth for more than 200 million years, from the time of the dinosaurs! The earlier species could not retract their head into the shell. Sixty different bones are connected to form the shell of a turtle, the shell has a nerve ending which makes them sensitive to touch and they have great eyesight and smell as well. Sadly they are endangered species and need to be protected.
Photographing wildlife or animals and birds is very gratifying and makes you feel closer to nature, it also teaches you patience as you need to wait for the right moment to capture.

It's amazing isn't it , to think they were one of the first few creatures before humans even came into existence. Yes ,they need to be protected from us humans from our lifestyle and actions . It is sad that they are poached and slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin and shells. So glad to hear your comments on the photographs. Thank you so much!
