Sylvan Heights Bird Sanctuary or Park, a hidden gem located in Scotland Neck, NC is a great place to visit. If you are a nature lover and love bird watching and photography, this is definitely your place to explore. This beautiful park has more than 200 species of birds. Mike Lubbock, originally from England, is the person whose passion and conservation ideas made possible this wonderful bird park. He is also affectionately known as 'the waterfowl man'.

The park has different zones for birds from Asia, Africa, South America, North America,  Australia, and so on with designated paths and name boards displayed. You can find varieties of birds include peacocks, doves, waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds from all over the world. One of the best attractions of this place and that is most loved by kids and adults alike, is a walk-in caged section for feeding cute little colorful birds.

Things to do at Sylvan Heights Bird Sanctuary or Park

You could buy some bird food on a stick or food pellets right at the park. The little birds perch on you, sometimes 3 to 4 at a time and you can enjoy feeding them from the little sticks attached with bird food. It is truly an amazing experience. You can also feed food pellets to the other big birds directly, they happily peck and eat it right from your hand. My kids had a great time feeding them. It is also a good walk around the lush green park of about 18 acres as you walk and enjoy the bird watching. There are nice shaded areas with benches to relax and indulge in ice cream on a hot summer day. Here are some captures of some of the wonderful moments at the bird park, a day well spent. Enjoy!

If you love nature and animals and are in North Carolina, do not forget to visit the famous North Carolina Zoo as well. It is a great place to spend time with family and friends. You may enjoy some of these random wildlife captures from my visit.
