This post on the ten ways to improve Pinterest SEO using Keyword targeting and strategy is a must-read for bloggers who are new to Pinterest and learning the Pinteresting marketing strategies. Keywords are extremely important for your Pinterest marketing strategy. (For folks new to Pinterest, please see my post on the basics of Pinterest). They are the basic building blocks for Pinterest Search engine optimization (SEO ). Pinterest keywords help your target audience find your pin, filter unwanted content, and ultimately reach your post and drive traffic to your site.
If you are not using the right keywords for your pins, you are making a grave mistake in your Pinterest strategy. Good quality Pinterest content and pins that are popular, are loved by search engines and are ranked higher by them. As content writers, your job is to make it easier for users to find your content. Here are the ten basic keyword strategies that you can follow for better and improved SEO.
How to improve Pinterest SEO using Keyword targeting strategy
- Do not leave the pin description of the pin empty: The search button on Pinterest is used by readers to search for information. Leaving the description of your pin empty is like purposely hiding your content. This mistake will prevent your content from showing up in the search results. Pinterest gives a lot of importance to pin descriptions. The pin description placeholder is a great place to add keywords. The relevant and popular keywords should appear earlier in the text description to rank higher.
- Use long-tail keywords where applicable: Ensure not to use too broad or generic keywords, for instance, cookies may be a popular keyword. However when used with some combination words, say "Christmas sugar cookies", they are likely to rank higher than just "cookies". Having details in the keyword is preferred. It will help if your keyword description includes a couple of sentences about your linked post along with some niche-specific keywords in the pin description.
- Find keyword-rich titles using the search bar: Pinterest has an autocomplete function when you type in the search bar. They are usually the words that most folks are typing and searching for. Navigate to the search bar and type the words related to your main keyword or board. You will find that it suggests some combination of words with a drop-down, listing the related words to your main keyword. Choose keywords that best fit your post or content from the list. They can be used as great long-tail keywords.
- Have interesting Pin titles using keywords: Have attractive and interesting pin titles with your keyword that will draw your reader. Add numbers or powerful words so the user is tempted to click through. You can look up some online tools to create blog post titles. Here are some that I tried :
- Use Pinterest Guided search to find keywords: There are tools like Pinterest Guided search to find and choose keywords. This also helps categorize and filter search results. The colored tiles under the search bar is where you will find Pinterest's guided search function. It can help you find long-tail niche keywords as well.
- Use Pinterest Analytics to find keywords: This is another place to find keywords. Under Analytics you can find your best and worst-performing pins. Analyze and inspect how each keyword fared and what optimization was used in each. Use that to come up with a strategy and build on that.
- Use Pinterest Ads to find keywords: You can use Pinterest Ads to find keywords as well. They have a Keyword Planner which helps you find the keywords that are most suitable for the campaign as well.
- Use keywords in board titles and board descriptions: Keywords can be used in board titles and board descriptions. It can be used in your profile name and bio as well. So keywords are not just used in pin titles and pin descriptions. Using keywords as hashtags are also suggested. While adding keywords, keep in mind not to overdo it, as it may look spammy, also referred to as keyword stuffing.
- Ways to use keywords in board descriptions: Google keyword planner is a great tool to find long-tail keywords. The keywords obtained here can be compared with the keywords used on Pinterest boards. (Use "Pinterest search" to look up the keywords for boards). Use this strategy to create keywords for the new board. Did you know Pinterest boards can also appear on search engine results? You can gain traffic by using good long-tail keywords for your boards. For instance, the long keywords that have the word “Pinterest” in them, are supposed to rank well. The niche-specific keywords covering a narrow topic will also rank as well. Ensure your Pinterest board has one mainboard for all pins. Create separate boards for each category. This strategy helps in a greater chance of showing up in search results.
- Use keywords in the alt image tag When you pin an image from your website to Pinterest, make sure that it has the relevant description in the alt image tag. It should be the same keywords that you intend to use in Pinterest as well. The description is pulled in by default, so it is a good strategy to check it thoroughly.
Hope these Keyword strategy tips that are easy to implement are useful and helps you improve the Pinterest SEO of your pins and content. I would be happy to hear any basic tips that I missed in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
