Why you'll love this Ladoo?
- This is one of the easiest sweets to make and also tastes good. Usually, rava ladoos need boiling sugar syrup with a one-string consistency, etc, which makes it a bit tedious process, but this recipe skips all of that.
- You need very few ingredients and you can make it in less than half an hour. The combination of Semolina and coconut is indeed a perfect one.
- The tiny bits of nuts and raisins also add to the taste, like in the fried modak recipe. It has a good shelf life if you keep it refrigerated, so you can enjoy it for a longer time. Kids usually love these sweet balls and keep them energetic.
- This sweet, along with other delicacies like kaju katli, doodh peda, tasty besan ladoo, gulab jamun using gits mix, is popularly made during festivals like Diwali, "festival of lights", Ganesh Chaturthi, or any other festive occasions.
Ingredients needed
- Semolina - Also known by the name Suji Rava, and is the main ingredient; some folks prefer the fine version of semolina for the ladoos like we use in wheat suji halwa. I used the regular coarse suji rava.
- Grated Fresh coconut - Frozen but thawed to room temperature can be used as well.
- Sugar- Granulated and fine.
- Cashew nuts and raisins are chopped into small bits.
- Milk to bind the ingredients when shaping into round balls.
Rava Coconut Ladoo Recipe - How do you make it?
This recipe is from a good friend who is an expert in making sweets. To prepare the ladoos, simply heat all the ingredients like semolina, sugar, and grated coconut, adding one after another, and then allow the mixture to cool. The nuts and cardamom powder are also added. A little milk is then sprinkled on the mixture to help bind the ingredients together.
Once combined, use your fist to shape the mixture into small balls. Since this sweet contains milk, it's essential to store it in an airtight container and refrigerate to keep it fresh and prevent spoilage.
- Step 1: Heat ghee and roast the nuts and raisins, and keep aside. In the remaining ghee, add semolina or rava and roast well.
- Step 2: After about 6 to 7 minutes, it should be roasted well.
- Step 3: Add in the sugar.
- Step 4: Keep stirring for about 2 minutes and combine well.
- Step 5: Add grated coconut and keep stirring again for another 2 minutes.
- Step 6: Add powdered cardamom and mix well.
- Step 7: Spread the contents onto a flat plate and let it cool for about 2 minutes. Sprinkle milk on the contents and mix well.
- Step 8: Take a scoop of the mixture with your fist and shape it into round balls. Transfer them into an air-tight glass container.
Recipe FAQs
Using very little ghee or milk can result in ladoos not being able to be shaped. Add a little warm milk, press with your fist for about 30 to 60 seconds, and then slowly roll to get the round shape.
In this recipe, I used the regular coarse suji upma rava, you can also use the bombay rava or super fine rava (semolina) for making this.
Rava ladoos can stay fresh at room temperature in an air-tight container for a day. Since we use fresh coconut and milk, it is better to store them refrigerated for about 3 to 4 days.
