'Poha' (Flattened rice or beaten rice ) or Aloo Poha Recipe makes the most delicious breakfast. There's something incredibly comforting about starting the weekend with a warm bowl of poha, soft rice flakes gently tossed with sautéed potatoes and onions, with the crunch of peanuts, coriander, and lime. It's a simple yet flavorful dish.

Why is this breakfast so loved?

    • It is very quick and easy to make with a handful of ingredients.
    • Poha is very filling and satisfying, and great for weekend breakfasts, just like the recipe for sabudana khichdi.
    • When soaked, flattened rice becomes soft, and the combination with flavored onions, potatoes, green chilies, and peanuts is perfect.
    • You can add variations to this recipe by adding grated coconut, tomatoes, and other spices.
    • Serve on the side with parippu vada recipe Kerala style, mirchi bajji, or sabudana vada air-fried, and a cup of chai (tea), they make a great combination

    Ingredients you will need

Ingredients to make Poha displayed for Aloo poha recipe.
    • Rice Poha, also called beaten or flattened rice (Aval)
    • Veggies: Onion, Green chilies, Potatoes, Coriander leaves, Curry leaves, Lemon
    • Kitchen Staples - Mustard, Cumin, Peanuts, Salt, Oil
    • Turmeric powder

How to make Poha using Aloo Poha Recipe?

Wash the Poha or flattened rice in a colander and make sure it soaks well, strains, and is soft and not too soggy. Splutter mustard and cumin in a pan, add peanuts, and roast them. To this, add chopped onions and green chillies and sautée well.

Add turmeric powder and salt, followed by the peeled and diced potatoes, and sautée well. Lower the heat and cover with a lid to cook the potatoes halfway through. Add the soaked, beaten rice (poha) mix thoroughly and squeeze lemon juice.

Cover with the lid again and make sure it steams well. Finally, add the chopped coriander leaves and curry leaves and mix well. Serve Poha with a sliced lemon and a cup of tea.

The combination of the chewy 'poha', peanuts, citrus lime, soft fried potatoes, and onions is an awesome flavor to relish. Have this dish with a cup of tea or 'chai' to awaken all your senses and tastebuds, and you cannot help but call it breakfast for the soul!

    Useful Tips

    • There are two varieties of the 'poha', thick and thin. This breakfast dish requires the "thick" poha. The thin poha is usually not preferred as the recipe requires soaking it in water, which can make it soggy.
    • This dish is a common breakfast in many households back home, and there are countless variations to how it's made. I usually keep it simple with just cumin, turmeric, and salt for spices.
    • You can make it interesting by adding vegetables like carrots and peas, or enhancing the flavor with garam masala, grated coconut, and other ingredients.

    Recipe FAQs

    Is Poha better than rice?

It is better as Poha has more fiber, digests easily, is less processed, with more nutrients, is light on your stomach, and has a lower glycemic index.

    How long to soak Poha?

Wash the thick Poha in running water in a colander and soak for about 2 minutes. It is better to rinse and strain, not soak.

    What is Poha in English?

Poha is beaten rice or flattened rice.

What is the shelf life of uncooked Poha?

The shelf life is about 3 to 4 months.
